IPL has evolved a lot over the years and has become the top franchise-based cricket league across the globe. With the kind of money and involvement of big cricketers across the globe and a huge Indian fan base made the event more popular these days. The IPL auctions have been the talk of the town during the IPL. Even talks and assumptions were in the rounds even before the start of the IPL auctions. So far there are lots of big surprises given by the IPL team management. There are lots of top quality players went unsold in the event and lots of budding crickets fetched a huge sum of the money during the auctions. Here is the list of top 10 expensive players in the history of the IPL.

The captain cool and probably the best captain India has ever produced till date Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been the brought by the Chennai Super Kings for  6.5 crores during the inaugural edition of the Indian premier league. It was no surprise that the CSK has no iconic players under their belt and Dhoni just returned from the inaugural edition of the T20 world cup where India went on to win it by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan. During that time amount was paid in dollars to the players and later BCCI changed it to INR.  Dhoni justified the team management by his entertaining performance and guiding his team to reach the finals of the inaugural edition. Since then he has been their pillar of strength and also owns the track record of reaching playoffs every time they played over the years. Under his leadership, CSK has become the best team in IPL and won three trophies in 2010, 2011 and 2018.

English players missed the inaugural edition of the Indian premier league due to ECB not issuing NOC to its players. After the fabulous success and huge popularity ECB decided to send its player to play IPL. Since then curiosity has been raised between the fans regarding who can be the expensive player in the next edition of the Indian premier league. As expected English bad-boy Kevin Pietersen who is one of their best batsmen of all time crowned as the most expensive player in season 2. He was brought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for whopping 9.8 crores and it was done to inject some big hitting blood in their line-up. Pietersen hasn’t lived up to the expectations as he was just played 6 matches in the season and was officially released from the franchise.

The big-hitting Trinidian all-rounder came to the limelight after his thundering performance at the inaugural edition of the champion’s league in 2009 where he guided his team Trinidad and Tobago to win the inaugural edition of the champion’s league. As expected he was brought by 3.4 crores by Mumbai Indians. He is a tall and charismatic all-rounder who has got the ability to hit big sixes and also handy with his slow medium pace. He is also an energetic player who has held famous catches in the history of the IPL till now. Since then he has been their regular member of the squad and playing a crucial role in their success. He is one of the few players who has played only for the single franchise over the years.

As per the rule, the team can retain only a few players and have to release them for the auctions once three years Gautam Gambhir was released by the Delhi franchise. After the gap of two years again Gautam Gambhir becomes the most expensive players in the IPL as he was brought by Kolkatta Knight Riders for whopping 11 crores. As Kolkata franchise was looked for an experienced player who can perform consistently and also do the captaincy role and they found Gautam Gambhir an answer for their queries. He has also lived up to the expectations by his strong performance in batting as well as his captaincy skills also came in handy on many occasions. He has guided them to title victories in 2012 and 2014. And he has guided them for four play-offs which a phenomenal record. With Gambhir at center stage, KKR formed a formidable unit which made them one of the best teams till now.

Sir Ravindra Jadeja was one of the exciting prospects in Indian team went on to become one of the expensive players in the IPL as he has gone for 12 crores for CSK in 2012. He lived up to the expectations and contributed to his team’s success by his consistent performance with bat and ball. His fielding abilities also came in handy in various occasions and he has become one of the best finishers in IPL and also took wickets regularly be it on power play overs or on slog overs.  He is still playing a major role in their success.

At the time Maxwell was finding to difficult to make a mark at international but thanks to the strong performance in BBL has allowed the IPL teams to show interest in him. He becomes one of the expensive buys in 2013 as he was brought by Delhi franchise for whopping 5.13 crores. The big-hitting allrounder also handy with his off-spin and a wonderful fielder glen Maxwell couldn’t live up to the expectations and was released by the franchise for next season.

Yuvraj Singh(2014 and 2015)

One of the favorite players for 90’s kids and hero of India’s world cup triumph in 2007 and 2011 Yuvraj Singh went for the whopping sum of 14 crores in 2014 for Royal Challengers Bangalore but the move turned out to be disastrous one and was released by the franchise in the following year. In the very next year, he was brought by Delhi Daredevils for the homogenous sum of 15 crores which raised the eyebrows of every cricket pundits but again he failed to live up to the expectations and was released by the franchise for the following year.

The man of the series for the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League, Shane Watson made the headlines after he was brought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping sum of 9.6 crores in 2016. But he could not able to replicate his performance and with a couple of average seasons, he was released by the franchise in 2018.

English player Ben Strokes was the highest bid during the IPL 2017 auction, eye franchise was eyeing to cash in the in-form player. With a base price of 2 crores in 2017, the bidding shot rose to 4,5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 crores in no time and finally settled at 14.5 crores.

Rising Pune Supergiant bagged the English player at 14.5 crores making him the highest paid overseas player of IPL 2017.

2018 was the replica of 2017, Rajasthan Royals made a grand comeback in 2018 after being suspended for 3 long years and grabbing Ben Strokes for a whopping amount of 12.5 crores INR and Jaidev Unadkat for 11.5 crores INR. This was the second year in a row for strokes being the highest paid IPL player, the other person to achieve the amazing feat was none other than Yuvraj Singh
